In 2018, Enter The Spider Verse saw Brooklyn teenager Miles Morales develop powers to become the one and only Spider-Man.
However, Miles soon realizes he’s not the only Spiderman as six other iterations of the character enter his world, establishing the “Spider Verse”.
Alongside winning an Academy Award Best Animated Feature, the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film and the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film,
Enter The Spider Verse
is also a great comparator to the digitally-minded metaverse.
As
Bernard Marr & Co explains, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is currently endeavouring to create his own metaverse - a social platform "that you're inside of, rather than just looking at."
One of the ways this is set to be achieved is through virtual reality - which Facebook has invested heavily since acquiring headset manufacturer Oculus in 2014 - theoretically creating virtual spaces for users to interact however they please.
Operating outside of the norms of interactions via social media (Wordle, for example),
New York Times proposes that the metaverse is on its to becoming a “fully realized digital world that exists beyond the analog one in which we live.”
Speaking to
CNET Zuckerberg elaborated: “We want to get as many people as possible to be able to experience virtual reality and be able to jump into the metaverse and to have these social experiences within that.”
Another example of a so-called Metaverse is interactive game Fortnite, which evolved from a Battle Royale-style game to incorporate dance parties, voice chatting and virtually-hosted performances.
On the topic Matthew Weissinger, the vice president of marketing at Epic (which owns Fortnite), remarked: “We’re building this thing called the metaverse — a social place.”
In what
Forbes has described as “the beginning stages of an innovative revolution”, Web3 [link] and the metaverse are expected to work hand-in-hand in order to change the way people work, play and interact with each other, with a specific focus on virtual reality.
The metaverse and Web3 are set to be discussed at Valhalla Private Capital’s
